How to cycle a fish tank: step by step
1. Assemble the complete aquarium
Rinse the tank, substrate and aquarium-safe décor with plain water. Do not use soap or household cleaners. Add the substrate, plants and hiding places, then install the filter, heater and thermometer. Fill the tank with tap water and add water conditioner according to its instructions.
Start the filter and heater. The filter must run continuously because the bacteria need oxygenated water flowing across the media. Turning it off for long periods can weaken the developing colony.
2. Add a controlled ammonia source
The bacteria need ammonia to feed on. Use a product sold specifically for fishless aquarium cycling and follow its directions carefully. Avoid household ammonia unless you can confirm that it contains no fragrance, detergent, surfactant or other additive. 4. Protect the bacterial colony
Beneficial bacteria live mainly on surfaces, especially inside the filter media—not floating freely in the water. Do not replace all filter media during cycling.
