A filter should provide suitable mechanical and biological filtration for the tank. Reduced flow, clogged intake areas or media cleaned under untreated tap water can reduce performance. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance, preserve biological media and avoid replacing every piece of media at once unless specifically required.

5. The substrate was disturbed

New gravel that was not rinsed as directed, vigorous aquascaping or an enthusiastic substrate clean can suspend fine particles. Mechanical filtration usually captures them over time. Avoid repeatedly stirring the substrate while the filter is clearing the water.

6. Excess light feeds algae

Sunlight through a nearby window and long lighting periods can drive green water. Use a timer and choose a schedule that supports your plants without leaving the tank brightly lit all day. Make adjustments gradually and watch both plant growth and fish behaviour.

  • Do not replace all the water automatically. Sudden chemistry and temperature changes can stress fish.
  • Do not wash biological filter media in untreated tap water. Follow the filter manufacturer’s care instructions and protect the bacteria that support the nitrogen cycle.
  • Do not add several chemical fixes at once. Products can interact, and rapid corrections may create a new problem.
  • Do not add more fish while the cause is unresolved. Extra livestock increases biological load.
